India: Three Brave Sisters Print E-mail

Poonam, age 16, decided to follow Christ. Her older sisters, Kusumam and Kalpana, also became Christians after they were invited to church by their Christian uncle.

Like most of the people in India, the girls grew up in a Hindu family. The only Christian in the family was their uncle.

Hindus are people who follow the religion called Hinduism. Hinduism does not agree with many of the truths in the Bible.

Many Hindus do not like violence. But radical Hindus sometimes try to get more power by threatening Christians. They especially do not like other Hindus to leave Hinduism and become Christians.

The Gang’s Warnings

A gang of radical Hindus found out that Poonam and her sisters were Christians. One day, the gang came to Poonam’s home. They warned the girls not to ever pray to Jesus or follow Christianity.

The next morning, the Hindus came back. They found Kalpana reading her Bible. The Hindus were surprised and angry that the girls had disobeyed their warning!

Again the gang warned them to stop their Christian activities. They said they would return later to check on the girls.

“The True Love of a Father”

When the gang returned that evening, they saw a Bible on the table in the girls’ house. Beside the Bible was a laminated verse from 2 Corinthians 12:9 that said, “My grace is sufficient for you.”

The Hindus were furious. They threw the Bible, some of the girls’ Christian cassettes, and a Christian calendar on the floor and stomped on them. They replaced the calendar with a picture of a Hindu god. The gang tried to make the girls worship the Hindu picture.

Poonam and her sisters refused to deny Christ. Then the men started pushing them around.

“Kalpana was the one that resisted the attackers most,” said Poonam. “She has very bad asthma, and she finally went into a seizure after standing very strong against the men.”

After a while, the gang went away. The three girls left home. Their parents do not want them anymore because of their faith in Jesus.

“We have only God,” Kusumam said. “He loves us with the true love of a father.”

Poonam and her sisters hold a worship service and Sunday school class every Sunday in the apartment where they now live. About 15 youth and adults and about 25 children attend.

The police held the leader of the gang for a short time, then released him. All the attackers are free. Pray they will come to know the only One who can make them truly free for eternity.
