Nomida and Momota: Banished for Their Faith Print E-mail

Nomida was about 11 years old when she decided to follow Jesus. Her friend Momota became a Christian when she was about 14. The girls attended church in a village in India.

Their parents were very disappointed when the girls would not worship Hindu idols. Nomida and Momota went to a Christmas celebration at their church instead.

Their families refused to give them meals, hoping hunger would force them to return to Hinduism. But Christians threw packages of food near their homes so they could eat. Their parents grounded them from church.

Nomida and Momota’s pastor had been the first person in the Hindu village to become a Christian. Other Hindus followed his example. Radical Hindus began to get angry about so many people leaving Hinduism to follow Christ.

One day, about five years after Nomida and Momota became Christians, a Hindu mob dragged the girls and seven other Christian women out of their homes. The mob took them to the village court for a public meeting. More than 500 Hindus gathered to see what would happen. The women and girls held hands to encourage one another during the court hearing.

Each Christian boldly proclaimed her faith. They were warned they would be banished from the village if they did not return to Hinduism. Each refused to deny Christ. “Who is leading you to act in such a defiant way?” a village elder asked. “Jesus is our leader,” the women and girls replied.

The elders ordered that the women’s heads be shaved as punishment. (They were “tonsured.”) Then they were banished from the village. Hindus would not give them jobs, and they weren’t allowed to use village water wells or to walk on some public footpaths.

Much has been taken away from Nomida and Momota. Jesus promises they will receive much more in return.

The Bible says, “Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life” (Matthew 19:29).

Ask God to keep Nomida and Momota at peace in Him throughout all their struggles.
